Things Fall Apart Pre Reading Journal (English 4)

What do you think is more important to a society and culture’s success, change or tradition? Is a culture that has outdated practices and observations still relevant? Why/ Why Not? What groups/ types of people would prefer change and what groups would prefer tradition?

Tradition is the most important because without tradition there can’t be a change in a society to tell whether or not there is a problem that needs to be improved upon. Tradition is a center point for moral teachings such as not to kill and not to steal and allows people to gain skills based on whatever their tradition is. A culture that has outdated some sort of society is still relevant in the sense some people still base their lives off of it or can use it to advance themselves in some sort of way. An example of people who like tradition are people who heavily follow religion (not specified) while an example of someone or group who wants change would be a citizen looking for ways to get ahead in society as a whole.

  2. I think tradition is more important to a society's success because if it has become a tradition, that means it works and until our unless it's outcome becomes different in a negative manner, it should not be changed. I believe the concept of outdating us false because it only depends to the individual. Some people may still be using a culture which maybe outdated to another person but those people who keep the outdated practice alive also keep their culture alive in a way making it very relevant. For example a group of younger people would prefer change while an older group if people would prefer keeping traditions because it was how they were raised.

Tradition is vital for a society to stay successful and well connected. Tradition comes from ancestors and the people close to you. This is something that is not usually changed because it works perfectly while keeping everyone linked to one another. It has its levels of making you unique. It could be tradition to open presents at a specific time during Christmas with your family, or tradition as in a city coming together for a festival (San Leandro-Cherry Festival). Even if the tradition seems outdated, it is what connects you to the people around you, while change, in many cases does not. Change is the concrete wall that locks you in disaster and prevents the continuation of life. If a tradition is changed, it can cause cataclysms. Such as changing a simple Christmas present tradition because the new stepparent said so. Preserving tradition facilitates the goal of keeping us alive long-after we have died.

  4. Imagine if we all had the same culture and society was all equal. That’s what our society and culture would look like if there was no change. To be honest, there would be no culture without it. Without change society and culture would be universally equal; however, due to the different environments we are put in we have different values and behaviors. Overall, we need change to survive.

Whenever you’re in a new environment or culture your change is necessary, if failed to do so there is an eclectic amount of consequences. Imagine if you had just gotten off a plane that landed in a utopia. Their culture and society is so perfect that you hop back on the plane, back to your city and rush straight to city council where you begin to request changes to the city. The truth is, you want to change the practices of your city to become more like the utopia you’ve just visited because of how you believe that these changes will improve the quality of life for many people and help the city survive. You are requesting to change a behavior and that is exactly what the purpose of traditions are.

Whenever you practice a tradition you are changing your behavior to fulfill the tradition. This behavior is taught at an early age and is later treated as a “norm.” Take this universal tradition as an example, the tradition to train a baby’s behavior to become more like a civilized human and not a wild mammal. Traditions are just a tool for training (or changing) an individual’s behavior.

We need change for a society to continue the nature of human evolution. Tradition comes along with change, because traditions are just tools to train human behavior. Therefore, there would not be any culture or tradition without change. The groups of people who would prefer change rather than tradition are found geographically. For the most part, if you live in America, Europe, China, Japan, or Australia than you prefer change. Majority of the people who prefer traditions over change live in developing countries. However, I believe change and tradition cannot exist without each other like good and evil.

For a culture to be successful, Tradition is definitely needed. Tradition gives you your roots from since you born until you have grown in an independent adult. Or at least in my families culture that's how we tend to go about things because if the tradition has been passed down to this point it must of have been successful in the past. From my experience, I still remember the family traditions my family did when I was younger and most of those traditions are used until this very day, and I find that extremely important because it makes a family unique and different from others. Eventually the time comes that certain traditions have no more use in todays modern era and a changeup is needed. Changes can be a positive thing, it’s always nice to come up with something new . Today’s society is full of innovative changes that have become very successful and as time goes by it will only continue to demand changes. The right balance of tradition and changes can form the most successful culture in my opinion. Tradition is there and it gives you a sense of where you came from and to be proud of it. Change is just as important because it keeps us up to pace with modern times. The younger generations will continue to force a changes, while those who were raised from a certain tradition will like to be more conservative on which changes are being made.

  6. I think tradition is more important to a society's success because for one thing, it is tradition for a reason. Either it has a way to make society's emotions become happy by a dance or musical performance or In my opinion tradition is what defines a certain community within the society. And since everyone wants to be defined as a member of his/her society, he/her sticks to its traditions which therefore define them. Even if they are outdated it is always good to try something new that you're not used too. Older people would prefer traditions because they have the wisdom and know what's best for the society. Children and younger people would support change because since it did not originate from their time they don't like what they don't know. -Albert felix

I believe that change is more important to a society's success because in a society things have to change, we can't all adapt to one thing. That wouldn't make anything better, having changes enhances the society by making certain things better for others. Some may not adapt to change very easily, but as a whole you cannot stick to one thing for a very long time, its good to make changes. Maybe you can make something a tradition, but in the end that tradition will have to be broken and be made into something greater. Cultures that have outdated practices may be relevant to certain people, but it wouldn't be for all. Others may like to have practices in their date, which is also good because they are open to learning and practicing new things. Although it may be more important to keep an outdated practice alive, there should also be new ones too. I think that the certain type of group that would like change would be citizens because they are more likely to be open to new opportunities. The certain group who would prefer traditions would be tribal people, because practices and traditions have been passed down from many generations and they would like to keep that alive with other generations in their tribes.

  8. Tradition to a society and culture is most important. Why? Because at least everyone in the world has a tradition they follow. Without it cultures would have no point in existing nor society would be how it has been for the years prior to today. However, just as our world changes so do the traditions.
Today not many have the time to carefully and critically go through all the details of all the traditional knowledge they use, rather they improvise their own traditions. They do so by keeping the best ideas (the ones that work) and discarding the ones that have been discovered to be falsely mistaken. But even this does not make change more important than traditions because whether or not they are improvised, they still exist and continue being passed down from generation to generation.
Therefore, does any culture that has outdated practices and observations still considered to be relevant? In my personal opinion yes, even then they are still relevant because it either works for them (that is why they continue practising the tradition) or they are all about keeping the traditions from their ancestors going.
Furthermore, depending on the kind of tradition, the type of group that would most likely want complete change would be the youth group because with all the changes going on they aren't used to old traditions nor they find it appealing. Those that would prefer to keep the traditions would be the older folks since they are more accustomed to the traditions they've been following for years.
Thus, Traditions are a way to remember your ancestors and to somewhat connect with them as well. They are a reason to get together, to trigger a right mind set, and to bring back blithe memories. Without traditions life would not be as fulfilled, for they help keep us in order.

  9. Although tradition holds group history and connections to your past, change is what makes people strong. In things fall apart it is very obvious that tradition is very important to the village and has worked for generations, although the title explains a lot more. Change that I expect to occur is bound to weed out the adaptable vs. the stiffs. Although there is nothing wrong with holding on to tradition, change is a process to move forward.
Imagine the beginning of man when we were nothing but single celled organisms. CHange lead to evolution and is the reason why humans have survived so long. Although this isn't the exact form of “tradition” vs. “change” the concept still applies. During sunday school, a catholic school, I used to have to learn about all this unbelievable stuff god could do and memorize prayers. During that time I saw it as relevant till I grew older and started thinking for myself. Every since I let go of religion it has made me a far more productive student during science classes because the factual way of how the world came to be is much more interesting. Should I have stayed in sunday school, a tradition on my fathers side, I may not have done as well because I wouldn't have believed it/soaked it in as much.
Although cultures that have outdated practices aren't necessarily irrelevant. Some traditions such as passing on stories and proverbs have intellectual meaning. These forms of traditions can be helpful for the youth of that culture. While foods/dishes that are past on from generation to generation can strengthen family bonds and bring families closer together. Personally, these smaller things are just as relevant as any other form of knowledge.
People that have a much more modern mentality and believe in science are far more likely to believe in change because science has only proved that life, for the most part, is a series of cause and effect. These factories that appear from time to time keep animals from going extinct. Observation has proven that people who are much closer to family and religion prefer tradition because it keeps a sturdy link to the past, which can also teacher others just as well.
Change is the way of the future and is the best way to learn. Tradition has a much more family connected lifestyle which does not touch me as much as experience. Change has lead to great innovation and is the reason why various species have lived so long.

Nothing is the same the next day. Things are always changing and it’s not always a bad thing. In today’s society, change is a significant aspect of today’s culture. As humans, we are always trying to improve on ourselves and make things safer, easier, and better overall. Compared to tradition, change is more important to a society and culture’s success. With change, perspectives are opened up, different types of culture are developed, and society can grow and become stronger.
Change is unavoidable. Without change, there is no variability, no diversity, no personality. The world would be without color if it ceased to exist. This being said, change can open our eyes to things that we neglected to see. For example, if protesters in Ferguson did not go and object police brutality, the world wouldn’t realize how often police take advantage of their power in society. If they had not, we would be unaware of all the flaws that our society has and wouldn’t take actions to make reparations to make the world a better place. In addition, change can help unfold different cultures.
Culture is a reflection of different parts of society. When changes are made in society, the culture will transform with it. When the Puritans exiled from England because of their different beliefs, they travelled to the United States to practice what they preach. When they began to colonize, they started to build their own society and culture based on their own standards, which was different than Britain’s. To this day, British and American cultures have different personalities and morals.
Change is like water to a seed. Without it it’s lifeless, but when water is added it can flower in to something completely different. This is similar to society in that we were once barbaric humans with what seemed to be outrageous morals, but now we are civilized and striving for success through peace and hard work. From the discovery of electricity to the creation of the internet, our evolution as people is a result of change.
In conclusion, change is a significant part of society’s success. With revision we are able to move on from the past and evolve. In that it can create open-mindedness, cause derivatives of cultures, and ameliorates society as a people; it is important to success. On the contrary, tradition should not be neglected and forgotten. It should be cherished to be look back upon to see the progress that change has made. All in all, change is an essential to creating society’s goal of achieving a utopia.

Change can either destroy, or build a nation. In reference to tribes and their traditions along with culture and society I believe they would destroy it altogether. Change can be welcome however there is also a reason why tribes decide to remain secretive about what they do and their traditions. The change within a country will destroy it outwardly.
Tribes traditions and cultures have lasted for thousands of years without the help of others or change in fact there are many still around today. They stand as a trophy of a conquered, consistently changed world. Tradition and culture a bring a history to society that has been passed down from generation to generation. It is the history of a family and who they are as people if you take that away you have nothing which becomes the ultimate sacrifice you make when wanting to implement change.
No matter how outdated and silly it may seem these traditions are relevant because they stand as an open book to the new modern world. They signify endurance and strength and a,so show the world how society once was. Change causes people to forget about the history of its people and for it causes the society to repeat historic mistakes time and time again.
Tribes who may be close to modern citizen may change their traditions in fear of not fitting in which is where society conformity may take place however stronger nations who have lasted thousands of years would refuse the change.
It is the people who decide the fate of tradition and it is a trend that has not yet ended. These are the secrets, ancestors leave behind to designate with the future generations, from there it is up to them to destroy or build on them.

Change can have so many different meanings. Change can mean a good thing, or a very bad thing. I believe that tradition is very important to a culture because you always have to know your background and where your roots came from. You need to understand who your family is and you need to be able to explain it to your future family and so on and so on. In my family we have certain traditions that have been going on for years and years. Every year on Christmas, we have a secret santa and we all gather around the christmas tree and open presents. Thats my family's tradition and change is not necessary, you have to keep the traditions alive in order to be a family. If my family's traditions have been getting passed down from when my mom was young to now, that means that they have been successful in not changing them. On the other hand, change can sometimes be necessary for a nation. If major debt is going on in the US and unemployment is reaching an all time high, then change would be acceptable in order to solve or fix any mistakes that happened.
Change is a very vague word and can be interpreted many different ways. In a sexist society, towards women, change might be too uncomfortable for them. If a woman tries to go for a job that is predominantly male, then society would instantly reject her because she is a female. She can be as qualified as can be but society would be uncomfortable for change to be occurring. To conclude, change can be a good thing or a bad thing in many different situations, but tradition is something that cannot be changed and has to be passed down in order to understand where your roots came from.

  13. Both change and tradition are important to a society and cultures success. In our society, people are constantly doing the same things that have been done decades before them. Such as a thanksgiving tradition or any other holiday tradition. It's always good to know your roots and keep your traditions alive.

Apart from tradition being important, change is also as important. If we didn't have changes in our society, we wouldn't be able to improve anything in our lives. We would be stuck doing the same boring thing, the same boring way. If people stuck with the same things such as the same way of washing clothes or the same way of cooking something, we wouldn't have the opportunity to experience new things. It would ultimately be holding us back from our true potentials.

Groups of people such as Liberals would be more likely to accept change and support it. They are more optimistic and more open minded on things that have to do with our society.
People who would oppose change and that would stick with tradition are conservatives. They mostly focus more on family values and traditions.

Change is not always as bad as people may think. Things are constantly changing all the time. For example, time, its never the same, it's always changing. Many people believe that change is a bad way to go in life but without change, there is no chance. You must take your risks at times.

We live in a society where people have there own opinions and likes. If there were no change in our society, people would clash with one another. Although, tradition is not irrelevant today, it is held by many families because they want to continue to share it with others.

A countless amount of Latino families share their traditions for years, for example the traditional celebration of a fifteen year old young women; that tradition symbolizes the girl becoming a women. It is those people who celebrate that year with the young lady, that use tradition and believe it is important.

However, everyone has there own personal opinion, for example, myself. I did not want to celebrate my fifteen birthday as most Hispanic young girls do. I chose to go on a trip and not because i didn't agree with the tradition. It was because i wanted to take on something new; leading to those who like to encounter new situations. Change is never bad, but isn't always good, as well as tradition.

In order for a culture to be successful there must be tradition. Tradition is what makes the family unique. It makes a family or culture stand out from the rest. Although I do agree that change is important. Why? because change creates opportunities for everyone.
There are still cultures that do “practices” and observations and the only one I can think of right now would be catholics, christians, islam and etc. These are religions that are implemented in their culture. Some people choose not to make it as mandatory which means change has occurred. Now a days religion is irrelevant to most families.
A “culture” that does not change their tradition would be the United States government they still run things the same way they did 10 years ago and so far I see no changes. Only changes we might be getting soon is a huge cataclysm. Therefore, The United States rather have tradition than change.
One Group that would rather have a change would be russia. They are a dictatorship and most people there don't agree with having a dictatorship and the people there are protesting.

There will always be people changing things in their culture. There are many people that have several cultures which their family wants to keep going and expect them to do it. All people are different and not all of them will continue the traditions. People might not follow their traditions but the find themselves creating new ones. They've changed their traditions but it's not all that bad because they have created new traditions that they hopefully would like to continue to pass down in the future. So change is not all that bad when you are creating new things that you will like to do and make it a tradition.

What is important and what isn't depends on the society and culture itself. Change and tradition are both important in society and cultures but it all depends on the views of the people to see which they will weigh out more. Without change there is no culture and without culture there is no change. Each is ever present in a society even if it seems it's not there because one influences the other in some way. Our culture is diverse because we always change, people always change, and change can also happen because of cultures. All of this can be true but for success there must be change despite the side a group may pick, especially if they think outdated practices are still relevant.

For a society and it's culture to progress and keep advancing, they must first accept change. If tradition were strictly kept in a society then they would be minimizing their diversity and culture. For example, there could be a society where their tradition is to do everything the old fashion way without technology like that of today. They would never be able to progress as fast as others because without proper technology they are placing limits on change and improvement. Surely there are cultures with outdated practices but they can still be considered relevant. Even though it may not be noticed or even considered, cultures still may have outdated practices which are relevant. In our culture today we still use books for reading although they are available electronically. Using books are an outdated practice that is still relevant today in our culture although electronics are making us move away from that. The change that we undergo is approved by and opposed by different groups, many of which we can think of.

Change and tradition have become separate teams for the people who strongly favor one and not the other. Generations before us and those from the days before technological advancement was at its highest would be the most likely to prefer tradition. Even now we see how they are barely giving change a chance because they prefer the way things were done before. Younger and newer generations such as ourselves tend to prefer change. An example would be how people who prefer tradition would wash clothes by hand whereas those who prefer change would instead chose to use a washing machine. The same goes with some preferring to physically hold a book while reading while others would rather read them on their phone or tablet.

Outdated practices might still be relevant but certain groups will give their perspective on tradition and change as they see their importance for the society's success. Change is important for progress while outdated practices are still kept as exceptions. Overall, the older and younger generations are conflicted between tradition and change based in importance in role for the society. Is there some fear that the two will clash if they are attempted to mix?

  18. A society that cultivates its tradition and decides to keep the same tradition for years or maybe generations has a closer feeling to its roots. It is important to keep tradition going on in a society because it is their history. Without history, how can a society identify itself ? Theres no way that they can, so therefore tradition is important because it is history passed down from generation to generation. Also tradition includes sets of morals or beliefs that each society decides to obey or follow. But, still traditions need a bit of change. For example a tradition that does not allowed any technology advances will be stuck in the stone era. They will become more and more irrelevant if they don’t keep up with the advances. Sometimes a change will benefit the cultures tradition by allowing it to be kept alive through the newer generations. Mostly younger people demand for change for reasons that they have a variety of sources around them that influence their thinking. Sometimes the demand younger people have change their tradition.Even though sometimes a tradition doesn't any type of change, we could take religion as an example. Religion has existed for many years and people don’t even mention a change for any religion/belief.

Traditions have had to originate from some type of change that occurred centuries ago. They are part of a cycle, where tradition comes from a change, and then over time again, a new change will form a new tradition. Tradition is typically seen as a grab on the past, while change is typically an onlook to the future.

Tradition is more important to a culture’s success than change because it is the basis of an individual's mindset. It is defined as customs or beliefs passed down from one generation to the next. People decide to keep their traditions because they want to know their history and it helps define who they are as a person.
On the other hand, change is more important in a common society as a whole. If a community holds on to the same traditions over and over, then there would be no major development over a period of time. For example, the scientists who broke away from creationism to study evolutionary theories taught the world that sometimes change can be a positive thing. Change is just a necessary asset that helps humanity develop.

In today’s society, it would seem more appropriate to say that change is taking over the path of tradition. However, many cultures still honor their traditions tightly. The United States of America, a country full of diversity, has cultural appreciation everyday. American citizens still speak their native languages, dress the way their culture dresses, and follow their values. It doesn’t mean that they’re old-fashioned or outdated, it just means that they are proud of who they are and of the roots that they came from.

The factor that separates the type of people who would prefer either change or tradition would depend on how they were actually brought up. People whose lives are centered around family traditions and values would expectedly want to keep on passing their beliefs down. Then there are other people, who think only forward and don’t have time to look into the past. They only think about the new innovation and hopes for an upcoming society.

Change and tradition are both essential in this world. Tradition helps shape a person and their own beliefs, while change can improve society and bring new ideas or innovation. Where would we be if we lived in a world with only tradition and no change? It would’ve gotten too blasé. If there was only change and no more tradition, then we’d be living in a basic community like The Giver.

Change and culture are both important concepts in life. Both of them are the basis of how people behave in society. I think they're both great for society, however I do lean more towards change as the more important aspect of people's lives.

Culture or tradition is needed to keep the bloodline alive. It's basically a commemoration for our ancestors or for whoever started it. Tradition is something you can't stop or change at all. Imagine doing something for so long since you've been born, such as breathing. You can't breathe another way or you can't stop breathing or else you would die. It's the same concept. Another example would be a passed down engagement ring that your mother gave you to give to your future wife. You can't just replace that ring or tweak it for even just a little, or else it would lose its value. Value as in the importance of the tradition. It has to be the same way it has always been for the next generation.

On the other hand, there are no improvements in tradition if you're going to do the same thing. Even if it's perfect already or if it seems perfect, there are always improvement in everything. This is why change is more important to our society. Change allows you to learn from your mistakes and make it better the next time. For example, technology nowadays are getting better and better each year. It always has new features, better quality, and more convenient for us to use. It is the same thing for living situations. You need change in your life to experience new things. You need change to improve!

Culture is no longer relevant in our society. However, it is still great to have around because differences are also great for the society. Some people don't even believe in their own cultures or traditions, but they are also sometimes forced to follow them. It's kind of like a religion for some people.

The types of people who will lean more toward tradition as more important in society are those who are religious or those who are born into a culture. You can't just be something else if you're born that way. Which is why culture exists. The types of people who will lean towards change are those who understands that the world needs change to function. Those who demand to love a more convenient life are the people that would chose change over tradition. Those who have iPhones, Androids, and other technologies will lean toward change, because they would want to have the next generation with better things that come with it. They don't want something new with the same, old features on their phones. So overall, change is more important to our society as we learn to improve every day.

Personally, what makes the society and cultures would be both. It wouldn’t work if it was tradition without the other. Traditions may be important, but their soul purpose is that they can start a new tradition when you want to make a change for things. As for change, if you’re tired of things being the same you need to start up a new tradition.

In the beginning of time everyone was equal had the same society and acted and treated the same way, but how do the cultures form? The cultures form because they rebelled and wanted to make the change. If we were in a society that still keeps the traditions. I bet you the men would be still be crucified like Jesus.

I remember when I was a child we had a ton of parties with singing and dancing. We would usually invite the whole family to our thanksgiving feast we would take pictures, eat, talk, and sing it was really great until my grandma told me that we weren’t going to do the Thanksgiving party. I was crushed I didn’t want it to change because that was the only day out of the year in which I could spend time with them.

Even if it's perfect already or if it seems perfect, there are always improvement in everything. This is why change is more important . Change allows you to learn from your mistakes and. For example, when you receieve a cavity it tells you that you need to go brush your teeth more.

  22. Tradition is a culture keeper. It’s made up of our rituals and beliefs. Tradition makes us feel safe and comfortable because we have a foundation for how things have been and still are conducted. When the next generation continues the tradition, it makes parents or leaders feel successful because the right principles and values are being replicated.

However, safe and comfortable aren’t always what’s best for growing organizations. In fact, if we’re too comfortable with the way things are, then we find it difficult to evolve and change. Change can be seen as the enemy of tradition. Yet change can also help a community come together. Community is responsible for itself rather than traditions being held in place.

Culture is vital because it enables members to function without the need to negotiate meaning every moment. Culture is learned and forgotten, so despite its importance we influence on the manner in which we perceive the world and interact within it. Culture is significant because as we work with others it both enables us and impedes us in our ability to understand and work effectively together. Being part of the culture is also holding the weight of tradition.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why do we practice an outdated idea in order to grow into our own California Poppy? How would past cultures value you as a person that advocates their change and traditional values?

The vital capacity to change that which is outdated and retain the true tradition is important to a society and culture's success. For example the constitution started out as an announcement stating the beginning of a government, but was later amended to fit the morals of later generations. If we were to keep all of the old traditions of last century America there would be major conflicts and restrictions, for example woman’s suffrage. Now you may believe change is everything, but its not, it's the job of pioneers to pass on a tradition and if you don't like it than find a more efficient way to change it. We as society and cultural legacy must pass down the torch carried by our forefathers but we don't have to burn our hands by doing so.

The predisposition of culture that has outdated practices is foreseen as obscure and non-conformist by the current society. If a trend falls out of popularity then will it loose its relevance? Because of the lack of popularity outdated societies are not needed in current society, or so you think. Could it be possible that a “old school” club with outdated ideas controls the majority of the general public consensus of right form wrong. No matter what a cultures morals are as long as they don't effect the innocent, they should be respected. If you are against a book club for the elderly, it may not be popular, but it is as relevant to those who believe in the club.

Those who prefer tradition over change will not be easily convinced to change compared to a new society that has to still test the cultural limits and boundaries. People who do not vote are the most susceptible to change because they don't want to have tradition in their government. Any family that celebrates holidays would support tradition over change due to the continuation of a legacy.

The cultural values of a society provides a clear path of those less informed to differ right from wrong. The best part of a culture is the moral values that are traditionally passed along and changed for the better. The most important job of a society is to balance change and traditions.
