ReplyDeleteSome characteristics described in Equianos autobiography that is described in Phyllis Wheatley’s is that they both talk about being separated from their families. And how it’s the saddest thing ever and they both have that in common. The way it differs in the poem and the story is that the story Equianos talks about how general it was his experiences with the things and how he looked at being away from his family being kidnapped and resold like more than twice. Now the poem on the other hand she describes her pain not physically like the story but mentally and how it affected her. Also how she wants free dome and actually wrote the poem. When they were both put to slavery she lived with a rich family but they gave her education and he unfortunately didn’t, so they both had very different but in a similar ways and perspectives.

DeleteBoth of these writers had their own perspective they had the go the same way they had to come to America. Equianos was kidnapped with his sister they got separated for the first time and then they separated from his sister when they got to the boats. Once he got to the boats he was scared and worried to what will happen to him. He was thinking that the white people were going to eat him, but one of his shipmates had told him he was going to be sold to the white people to work. Phyllis Wheatley was the first African American woman to write poetry when I read her poem she was going the same way that Equianos had been through when he was little. When she was own by a man he was surprise at her on her poetry and once he read her poem he taught her more about literature. Equiano and Wheatley are similar they both have the same back round and they have the same child hood.
ReplyDeleteThe characteristics of Equiano's autobiography distinguish it from Phyllis Wheatley's poem in different ways. Equiano describes his life with way more detail and uses lots of examples to what his talking about. Phyllis Wheatley poem is short but tells us a lot in each word. Both of them were separated from their families and were put to slavery. But Wheatley didn't have to worry much in a cruelty kind of way. Where in other hands Equiano did suffered. His message in his autobiography different from Wheatley poem. Since Equiano explained mostly everything he went through the bad and some good moments. Wheatley also had bad events, but at least she got some good slaveholders that taught her how to write and read. With this education she got the chance to see how of a good poet she had become. I think Wheatley poem described what she felt and wanted during that time. It seems like she was really affected through all she had gone through.
ReplyDeleteWithin the autobiography and the poem, the characteristics that distinguish it is in Equiano's story, he was scared and hurt. But in Wheatley's poem, she was also scared but then she had hope when she lived with the family that had bought her. But they both was sad from being seperated from their families. Equiano's message was saying that to not seperate them from their family and how it is very hard to live life like that. In Wheatley's poem, her message is to all America that she does not want people like her, African Slaves, feel like how she feels. And for them not to go through what she went through.
ReplyDeleteA characteristics they Equiano shared with Wheatley poem was that they were both baught to go to families but was very upset with the seperation of their family they knew they wouldnt see them again. The message that Equiano is trying to say is that no matter where you are at your always going to need your family so u can feel secure. The message Wheatley poem is saying was mostly saying how hard was it to be an African slave and what she had to go through.
ReplyDeleteIn Olaudah Equiano's autobiography he was a lot more descriptive and detailed about his experience as a slave. He started from when he was a kid and went through his whole lifetime. His description and detail made the reader feel connected to Equiano as a person. Phyllis Wheatley didnt go into much detail about her experience. Wheatley's poem was aimed at a direct person which was stated above the poem. She had something she wanted to say and directed it at that one person. Olaudah was informing a larger audience about the tragedies of slavery. He wanted to let people know how horrible it was and what he had to go through.

ReplyDeleteBoth of their stories have the same background. They were kidnapped from their loved ones and were sold. They both experience the emotional pain of being separated. Equiano lost his sister and was constantly and Phyllis was kidnapped and sent to the Americas. However their lives life’s when they came where different. He suffered during his life as a slave. Phyllis on the other hand was purchase by the Wheatley family who treated her kindly and gave her an education. The message in their writings are different. Equiano’s autobiography shows the pains and sufferings of slavery. Phyllis poem is sending a message that she does not want her people to go trough the same things she went through.
In Equiano's autobiography and in Phyllis Wheatley's poem describe the hard time they had a young child. Both of them were separated from their families, and they didn't get to experience the warmth love of having a family member be their side. There was a point where Equiano was with is sister, but it was just for a little while. Equiano was petrified of the white people actions when he arrived, but later on in the ship one of the shipmates explained to him what was going to happen; being sold for labor. Phyllis was also sold to white people, but she wrote poetry. One day, her owner saw her poetry and was amazed by her work, that he decided to teach her literature. As Equiano tells his readers about his life how harsh it was, Phyllis wants her readers to know that she went through a lot of pain and doesn't want anybody else go through what she went.
ReplyDeleteThe two stories talk about the struggles they’ve had to face in life. In Equiano’s autobiography he talks about all the different thinks he face during slavery in more descriptive terms. It starts from when he first gets kidnapped from his house, with the middle being about all the times he gotten sold to different owners and ends with him going to Barbados. In the Wheatley poem it talks about the opportunity the people that bought her gave her education so she could later be a poet even after the matter of her dying people still can read the struggles she went through to be where she was at back then before she died. Equaino’s message to me is towards the people who believed that slavery is ok because it’s in the bible. Wheatley poem is her struggle of trying to become something meaningful to herself but having to face many struggles.

ReplyDeleteEquiano’s autobiography distinguish it from Phyllis Wheatley’s poem becuase in Equiano's even though both the autobiography and the poem have similar meanings the people as well also have very similar backgrounds in there past where they came from (their past) such as having being separated from their families at a very young age. Equiano's is more in depth and she talks about her life more in depth and what happened where as Phyllis Wheatly's poem is not as detailed and descriptive and is not written for as large of an audience. Phyllis's poem a lot of information is just in the title where the poem is aimed directily more at one person. Both of their stories can be so similiar but different at the same time portraying different messages that in the long run connect to each other indirrectly. Both Equiano and Wheatly are similar to each other and different at the same time.
After comparing Olaudah Equiano's autobiography and Phyllis Wheatly's poem, it is evident that the two shared some similarities. Some of the main similarities include the fact that they experienced the cruelties of slavery, were both kidnapped and seperated by their families at such a young age. However, the characteristics of Equiano's narrative that distinguishes it from Phyllis Wheatly's poem was that his writing style was much more in depth and descriptive. This allows the readers to really understand the emotions that he is trying to portray implicitly and explicitly especially when he explains the events that occurred that affected him the most such as being separated from his beloved sister and the excruciating pain he felt. Another difference was the main message of both pieces; in Equiano's story, his message was directed to the Christians of his time that supported slavery in which he wanted to persuade them to fully think about what destruction of human rights they have caused. Phyllis's message, on the other hand, was mainly focused on the idea that she did not want people of her kind to struggle in which she directed this message to one particular person. Both pieces were also written in a way that their messages could be interpretted implicitly and explicitly.

ReplyDeleteEquiano’s autobiography and Phillis Wheatley’s poem distinguishes from each other because their views of slavery is different in the sense of their tone and attitude. Since Philis Wheatly’s poem was addressed to a person of higher power, it is obvious that since she is a younger black women, her tone of voice is more pleasant and respectful as to Equiano’s explicit autobiography. In detail his appalling journey through what was known as the middle passage. Both the autobiography and the poem appeal to different audiences. Equiano’s story most likely speaks to people who want learn about slavery and the crucial depth of humanity while Wheatly’s poem is more toward the positive of her experience and enlightening people
After reading Equiano's autobiography and Phillis Wheatley's poem i noticed that they had shared some similarities!Their similarities involved the pain and cruelty of slavery and what they went through.Difference about the two stories was that Phillis Wheatley was a girl and Equiano was a boy and how they both had a different story about what had happened. They did more to boys then they did to girls back in the old days! In both storys they were saying how they felt and what they have dealt with when they were being cruelty beat.Their stories were different becuase they are two different people but at the same time what they went through was the same in some sense.
ReplyDeleteAlthough both Equiano's autobiography and Phyllis Wheatley's poem are coming from the same background story, they differ quite a bit. Equiano wrote a detailed autobiography about his life in slavery. From childhood to adulthood, Equiano described the hardships of slavery and the affect it left on his life. Phyllis Wheatley also shares the characteristic of being a slave, but differs because she didn't actually work like a slave was suppose to. Since she was purchased by a wealthy family, she had it a lot easier than majority of the slaves. Because of the opportunity she had, education, Phyllis Wheatley's poem is talking about independence and comparing that to slavery. She also writes the poem to a specific person, while Equiano's autobiography's audience is anyone. Since Equiano and Phyllis experienced different slavery experiences, we can see that it reflects in their writing. Their writings have two different meanings.
ReplyDeleteEquianos autobiography and Phyllis Wheatley’s poem have some similarity and some differences. The similarities are that they are both slaves that have been stripped from their home land of Africa, separated from their families, and at some points lost all hope of surviving. Other similarities were that they were both kids when they were kidnapped from their families. They both had at one point loving masters who treated them as one of their own child. But there were many key differences, like Equianos autobiography takes about getting kidnapped and getting sold and getting kidnapped all the time. While Phyllis Wheatley’s poem about how she was separated by her parents. Equianos autobiography was more in depth and descriptive about how he has kidnapped and the events in the life as a slave , Phyllis wheatly’s poem was more deep and talked more about her parents than the actually process of being transported to America and ended up to writing poetry.

DeleteTo me, Equiano's and Wheatley's stories have different characteristics and messages. Wheatley seems to have written her work while she still was a slave, where Equiano's work reads as though he wrote it many years after being a slave. Wheatley's work has the title of a letter, Equiano's autobiography is just that - an autobiography. A main characteristic difference is the length. Wheatley's poem is twelve lines long and describes the horrors of slavery in concise statements. Equiano's life story is spun like a yarn through seven pages.
ReplyDeleteEquiano's message writes for hope for freedom, Wheatley writes in hope of freedom. Wheatley's poem is more of a plead for rights, and Equiano's autobiography is a tale about wanting rights. However, these two seem similar, they are not. This is because Wheatley's poem was written in the moment, and gives instant reaction, while Equiano's was written much later, after the scars of slavery had healed a bit.
The characteristics of Equiano's autobiography distinguish it from Phyllis Wheatley's poem is that equiano talked mostly about his personal life as being a slave , kidnapped and taken away from his family same as the Phyllis Wheatley's Poem besides personal life but it also talked about poetry . The message in his autobiography differ from that in wheatley's poem is by both wanted to get out of slavery but Equiano's autobiography talks about his life and one day having human rights but with Phyllis Wheatley's poem talked about how she had to deal with it and she had a difference that was she was well educated for example able to write good poems and lived with a rich family but that didnt mean she wasn't a slave.
ReplyDeleteThe characteristics that both poems share in Equiano’s biography from Phillis Whealtley’s poem were that both of them told the cruelties of slavery. Both documents also included that separation of family .Although Equiano’s narrative was detailed more is the passage to the Americas; Phillis Wheatley’s writing was more detailed into abolishing slavery. The message in the autobiography differs from the message from the poem in that the autobiography explains more about family and how the cruelties of slavery destroys families, while Phillis Wheately’s poem is intended to white and black freemen toward abolishing slavery by gathering large numbers so that they will be heard. Characteristics between the two documents also differ from the author. Because Phillis Whealely was owned by a white man that allowed Phillis to learn to read, then his intentions will be toward a wider identity of people rather than the free Africans that were not enslaved.
ReplyDeleteEquiano autobiography and Phyllis Wheatley’s poems are a bit similar in the way that they both came from slavery and how they both talk about slavery. Also they were both separated from their family as well of kidnapped at a young age. But distinguishes , Phyllis Wheatley’s masters were wealthy so she didn’t have to do much since she was a girl as for Equiano that had to do much more because being a male they had more strength than girls so they had to do more. Equiano’s autobiography was the description on how slavery was and how it was done in his era, and to tell people how cruel they were and Phyllis Wheatley describes that she wouldn’t want anyone to go what she went threw, she didn’t go through much description of her own experience but I think that would be something she would like to describe more.
ReplyDeleteEquaino's autobiography differ's from Phyllis Wheatley poem because even though they both talk about a type of slavery they have different storys. The things that differ's the most is in Equaino's story he had to go from place to place in Phyllis's case she got adopted into a nice home
ReplyDeleteBoth Olaudah Equiano and Phillis wheatly had a different view of slavery. It was different in the sense of tone and attitude. The poem that Phillis Wheatley wrote was adressed to someone if higher power. It was obvious that for an african american female her tone of voice had to be pleasant and respectful. While in the autiobiography that Equiano wrote he described his appealing journey through the middle passage. While Equiano was forced to go from place to place in order to live Phyllis was adopted into a wonder home which treated her as if she was their daughter.
ReplyDeleteOlaudah Equianos autobiography goes on to describe how his adventures brought him to different villages. He explains how he was born in an African village, while playing outside with his younger sister, both of them were kidnapped and sold into slavery to different villages. It differs from Wheatley’s poem because the appeals are asking for different effects on tribulations she have been through in her life. I n her poems, there is evidence of many people that are interested with work. On the one hand, this highlights how her accomplishment was, and how suspicious most people would be about its possibility. But at the same time, it emphasizes that she is known by these people and accomplishment in itself, which many of her readers could not themselves share.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between both Equiano’s and Phyllis Wheatley’s stories are the way they are written. Equiano's is written as an autobiography explaining every little detail of how he was sold and what he felt and experienced when his sister was taken away from him twice and when he was sold a few times. Wheatley's is simple yet difficult to describe because it is a poem explaining how slavery was cruel and painful. In Wheatley's poem, she is dreaming about having rights just like any other that is suffering through slavery. Equiano’s story is more o f a retelling of the experience he endured when he was first captured and put into slavery. Both of them come from the same background and end up surviving slavery.

ReplyDeleteThe autobiography talks about slavery in detail and what actually happens in slavery and the slaves’ point of view. The poem shows the emotion that is going through a slave’s mind. The autobiography tells the story of a boy being separated from his family and being forced in to slavery. After being forced in to slavery and being switched between owners. While being switched owners he moved throughout Africa, but when he reaches the coast he is shipped across the Atlantic ocean to be a part of the Atlantic Slave trade. The message in the autobiography differs from the poem because the story talks about the pain and raw emotion about being separated from people that he cared about. Also the autobiography gives more detail and explanation of what was happening during the slave trade and the time that slaves were being used. Overall the autobiography is more heartfelt and touching to me then the poem.
Both Equiano and Phyllis Wheatley came to the new world as slaves, kidnapped from their home. Wheatley and Equiano’s share similar stories because they both talk about how they were taken from their home and had hard ship, and how they were oppressed as slaves. Both Wheatley and Equiano were slaves but Equiano's autobiography descriptively tells about the evil in slavery and how the slave traders destroyed human rights. Equiano also told of the inhuman ship ride during the middle passage to America and of the slave auctions as if they were live stock.
ReplyDeleteBoth have themes of slavery but a different message. Equiano’s autobiography sends a message about the evils of slavery and how it tears families apart, it also tells about how inhuman it was in the states. Wheatley’s poem on the other hand compares the colonies as being the King of England’s slaves. One story tells the tale of slavery while the other compares it to something political.

ReplyDeleteBoth Equiano and Wheatley were slaves that were kidnaped at a young age to be sold into slavery. The Europeans saw the Africans as inferiors, and they felt it was right to enslave them. The autobiography of Equiano talks about the journey of a little boy that has been captured to become a slave. It showed the hardship Equiano had to go through when he was kidnaped when his sister and him where playing, from the separation of the people he cares for, to being put into a ship to be sold as a slave in a land he is not familiar with. His autobiography showed very horrific things that happened to slaves. In Phillis Wheatley’s poem she is talking to a person of higher power, so she needed to be respectful. She believed that The Earl of Dartmouth, would share the sense of stopping slavery, she tries to appeal to him with a poem.
